Headless Commerce: The latest trend and future of eCommerce

With the consistent improvement being experienced in all industries with tech, developing new and easier ways of doing things is fast becoming a norm. Oftentimes, the new solution is built on the principles of the functionality of the existent system. E-commerce platforms have revolutionized the concept of trading and commerce. It is a more adventurous and interesting tweak to the eCommerce technology.

What is Headless Commerce?

As the name implies, headless commerce describes an eCommerce architecture where the front-end view layer is disintegrated from the back-end layer of functionality. This solution is aimed at digital commerce flexibility. In a headless commerce platform, the front end is the template or theme for user experience, and the back-end layer can be deployed for the front-end theme by developers. The backend layer manages all e-commerce operations on the network.

The Headless Commerce architecture

Over the years, the functions of UI & UX designers and developers have become more distinct. The creative team of designers focus on creating the best UI that give users unforgettable virtual experiences on the e-commerce platform while the developers are charged with the implementation of back-end API channels that ensure overall functionality. 

Headless commerce back-end layer functionality hinges on APIs that are specifically adapted to the requirements of a headless commerce needs. 

When a transaction is initiated on the front-end layer, requests are sent through the layers by the network implemented APIs. In simple terms, when users proceed to initiate a transaction on their device, the front-end layer of the headless commerce system transfers the requests to the back-end application layers to complete the transaction. The eCommerce platforms provide the content, collections of goods, and the preferred payment gateway for transactions. After transaction processing at the back-end application layer, a confirmation message is transferred through the implemented APIs to the e-commerce layer at the front end.

In the traditional e-commerce platforms, the front-end and back-end layers are closely connected, making the process of customization very difficult. More so, any user interface (UI) change requires a back-end update, making the whole update process cumbersome. Headless commerce establishes the stand-alone of the front-end and back-end layers making updates on each distinctive part easy. The ease of change headless commerce offers, allows digital stores to stay updated and competitive with endless design capabilities.

In the current online commerce space, many websites are fast losing the ease of navigation a website should offer. However, changing the interface is a difficult task due to the interconnection between the front-end and back-end layers. Headless commerce enables a frequent update of the front-end layer without having to worry about impacting your web store’s performance.
